How does the shared woodworking shop work?

What is a Shared Workshop?

A shared woodworking studio might seem like a new idea to some, but this concept has been around for a long time. We have a woodworking shop that is outfitted with all of the machinery and tools one needs to do woodworking. To gain access to the shop, machinery, and knowledge, you subscribe to a monthly membership.

What does the shared woodworking studio Membership cost?

We have different price points to meet the many needs of our members. The basic plan is $400/month, and the premium membership is $600/month. Most people opt for the premium membership because of the benefits it provides. For more info on membership types, prices, and availability, please visit our “Memberships” page by clicking on the tab at the top of this page.

I want to grow my woodworking business. Can I have more access than a premium member?

Yes, you can! We have an Elite membership that can be tailored to your small business’ needs, but generally comes with unlimited access and the ability to have an employee work with you in the shop! Please contact us if you need more information on our Elite package.

What if it’s not for me?

If you sign up for Framework Studios membership program and discover it’s not for you, all you have to do is cancel your membership. There is no term contract, so you’ll still have access for the rest of that month, and we will not charge you again. The best part: if you decide at any time that you want to come back, simply sign up for another month!

I just need to do one project. Do I need to buy a whole month’s membership?

You do not need to buy a month’s membership to the workshop if you only need a day with the tools. You can pay a daily drop in rate if you just need a weekend to knock out that DIY woodworking project. Contact us with your needs and we will figure out how best to accommodate you.

How many workshop members will be in there at one time?

The beauty about our set up is that while in Studio, every member has their own workbench outfitted with a vise, so you don’t have to worry about having to sharing your space with another woodworker. If all of the workbenches have been booked for one time slot, a member will not be able to book shop time for that period so that it’s never overcrowded.

How many workbenches are there?

We have 4 workbenches for our members in the shop. We also have enough small tools and clamps to support many people working on their projects at once!

Do I have to bring my own hand tools?

While the shared woodshop will have workbenches with vises, small electrical tools like sanders and drills, we do recommend members bring their own hand tools such as hand planes and chisels. As any woodworker using hand tools only will know; you have to maintain a sharp edge on your tools and this is too much to ask of all members to maintain.

Can I use the edgebander?

Absolutely! Our edgebander is available for all monthly members to use. There is a $60 set-up/maintenance fee per use, which includes your first cartridge of hot melt glue. Additional cartridges of glue can be purchased for $20. The machine is only available during business hours and while a Framework Studios representative is in the building.

How do I get started?

After you become a member of Framework Studios, we ask that you contact us by email (info@frameworkstudios.ca) to schedule you first booking. Included in each membership is a one hour safety orientation, plus the benefits listed on our website for your chosen membership type. Please note that ALL Members (whether on a monthly or daily membership) are required to book their first time in The Studio during regular workday hours: Monday - Friday 9am - 5pm. Sean or Morrah MUST be present for ALL Members' first day at Framework Studios. After your first day in the studio, management will either approve future bookings to be made at the discretion of the member OR will require further supervised shop bookings to be made during regular workday hours. This continues until the members woodworking skills are deemed by management to be suitable to work alone.

Do you offer woodworking courses?

We offer woodworking courses for beginners, intermediates and advanced woodworkers. We have 2 types of classes;

1) Skill specific classes. This will include things like “Sharpening your hand tools”, “How to Cut a Dovetail”, and “Joinery Basics”, to name a few.

2) Project specific classes. These will entail completing a woodworking project from start to finish. Examples would be making a stool, chair, planter, picture frame, coffee table, or dining table.
